Season 1 Rating: [Watch it] / It depends / Skip it
  • Narcos is excellent entertainment and definitely worth watching. Each episode inserts image or news clips about the actual source material to great dramatic effect. I watched Breaking Bad, thinking such a story could never happen, but look at Pablo Escobar. He was real. It follows Escobar's story, at least what is known, quite closely.
The episodes are well paced and avoid feeling like filler. A lot happens in the first season. Escobar goes from smuggler to drug kingpin, which makes me wonder how far this show will go. Based on the source, I don't see it going past two, maybe three, seasons.

Season 2 Rating: Watch it / [It depends] / Skip it
  • It's entertaining to see the fall of Escobar, but it takes way too long. The story structure works well with parallels between season one and two. We see the rise and fall, but this season just delays the inevitable. While this season is more of Escobar and less of the DEA agents tracking him, we still see too much of the agents. We also see too much of the other cartels. I assume they are included in case this series gets a third season, which I hope it doesn't. This follow real life, so it was easy to guess where this season would end, and that unfortunately robbed this season of any tension. I have no interest in seeing another season, if one is even planned. The story season one started is finished. While season one had a good pace, this season padded the story to reach ten episodes. Is it a coincidence that Escobar wore padded sweaters and gained weight (padding) throughout this season?

Season 3 Rating: [Watch it] / It depends / Skip it
  • I liked season three a lot, and it might be my favorite season. It basically functions as a reboot, with many new characters, providing multiple viewpoints on the drug war. Characters want to maintain power, escape the power, or capture the power. This leads to a lot of double dealing and tension.
We never really got to know Escobar, not like the characters this season, and this is still for a large part based on fact. The stock footage reminds us of that when we see the show recreated Miguel's clothes when he was apprehended. While a lot of the drama is manufactured, this is a television show. It needs that drama. Using the large story as a framework is the perfect way to do this.
