Reviews:
Season 1 Rating: [Watch it] / It depends / Skip it
  • The Duffer brothers have created an amazing series. It juggles multiple story lines and paces them just right for maximum intrigue and excitement. We've seen the individual ideas before, but it's combined perfectly so that it feels unique and fun. It has hints of Super 8 (2011), Spielberg's E.T. the Extra-Terrestrial (1982) & The Goonies (1985), with The X-files (1993-2002). It feels like an eight hour movie and that's a compliment. It's so well made. The acting and directing is great. The score is superb, with the synth sounds fitting the time period exactly. The only bad thing is that it ends. It's great from start to finish. I hope there is a second season and I want it to be an anthology.

Season 2 Rating: [Watch it] / It depends / Skip it
  • The Duffer brothers are great story tellers. Season one was an 8 hour movie, and season two is a 9 hour movie. Season one was a tall order to follow, and they pulled it off. It's an engrossing experience with so many intense and humorous moments. The way this season is structured, the build up and pay offs are masterful. Each episode ends on a mini-cliff hanger, forcing you to watch the next one. There is a lot of '80s nostalgia, and like the sequels from that period that served as inspiration, this takes the concept from season one and expands on it. Everything is more and bigger. I love this season, but it leans heavily on season one for character foundation. I missed the Mike and Eleven from season one. They are still in this season, but I didn't like their arcs. Despite my problems with some of the broader story items, they all fit into place with purpose, coming full circle. This is great television, one of Netfli'x best. The parts I like are good, just not great.

Season 3 Rating: [Watch it] / It depends / Skip it
  • This season improves over season two. Both the kids and the show are growing up. While it doesn't top season one, this season focuses on characters - at least a few of them. The monster(s) are great even if their reason for being present is a bit flimsy. The show is still an ode to the '80s, and that definitely adds charm. While the first two episodes set the stage, the remaining six never felt like filler. This season kicks into gear in season three and just doesn't stop. The plot really pushes this season.
