Plot
Late in his career, Lonnie "The Hawk" Hawkins struggles to recapture the magic when he was 2004's top golfer, refusing to believe he's anything but one stroke away from golf's greatest comeback.

Verdict
Will Ferrell plays a crass, selfish, washed up golfer. He's offended everyone that knows him and anyone else that meets him. It's Ferrell playing his typical obnoxious and absurd role. While there are plenty of subplots to fill the episode count, the jokes lack variety. The Hawk manages to stage a late career comeback, playing against his estranged son. If you like Ferrell's brand of comedy you might like this, but I often don't and I didn't. This coasts for far too long both on Ferrell's past movies and the premise. This takes a Ferrell concept that should have been a movie and stretches it to the length of a season.
Skip it.

Review
"The Hawk" Hawkins (Will Ferrell) is a has been golfer. Long past his prime, he keeps playing hoping to regain former glory. When his caddie and best friend Old Henry dies, Hawk wants to keep playing as he's doing well and doesn't want to stop the round. Everything about the character plays to absurdity, or comedy depending on your perspective, from the way he talks to the golf ball, propensity to wear a thong, to how he finds a new caddie, Sam (Fortune Feimster), in a Walmart parking lot.

Will Ferrell plays Lonnie "The Hawk" Hawkins

Hawk starts playing better, working his way through tournaments and even getting to the PGA tour. His son Lance (Jimmy Tatro) is a promising golfer, and he doesn't have much of a relationship with his father. Lance is unnerved playing against Hawk. The better Hawk does, the worse Lance plays.

This is a typical Farrell comedy, absurd and outlandish. Ferrell makes several 2000s era jokes claiming it was a different time only to be rebuffed. That happens several times. There are several sub plots to fill time. Lance has a rocky relationship with his fiancee. Hawk's wife Stacy (Molly Shannon) tries to market an alcoholic drink called Teed Off. She appears for comic relief, at least I assume that intent. She's also another character off which Ferrell can bounce jokes as he's still infatuated with his ex-wife.

It's another Ferrell character, but this stretches every aspect, from the length of scenes, the repetition of similar jokes, to padding the episode count. You could trim this season down to a movie that has the potential of not wearing out its welcome.

Fortune Feimster, Will Ferrell play Sam, Lonnie "The Hawk" Hawkins

Hawk has the chance to win at Pebble Beach, the only course he couldn't beat. As promising as he was, he lost there and his career was never the same. With a second chance will Hawk play to win or defer to his son who's only just beginning? As selfish as he's been, it's easy to assume Hawk will have a redemptive moment. If you watch this, you'll see there aren't many of those.

This relies on Farrell's former hits without adding much more. It's still mired in the same comedy with no updates. The only reason to make this a series would be a ploy to gain more watch time.
