Plot
Earth's mightiest heroes must come together and learn to fight as a team if they are going to stop the mischievous Loki and his alien army from enslaving humanity.

Verdict
This released to much excitement, showcasing all of these Marvel super heroes in one movie. Succeeding Avenger movies have surpassed this one as a movie full of super heroes is no longer novel. The plot is weak. It's just an excuse to unite the Avengers. At this point, the only intrigue is that this was the first Avengers movie.
It depends.

Review
This is a fun movie, though it was better at the time before the addition of more Avengers movies. This was the culmination of Marvel Studio's phase one, the sixth movie in the universe. The fun dervies from putting the four leads from the preceding movies together. Iron Man, Hulk, Captain America, and Thor fight Loki for the fate of the world. This has plenty of large set pieces and mindless fighting with extensive collateral damage.

Chris Evans and Robert Downey Jr play Captain America and Iron Man.

Loki plays the bad guy because we need a villain and he's the best candidate from the previous movies. His motivations are shallow. He wants to take over Earth, but that seems to be just to give the Avengers a reason to assemble. He's acting on behalf of the Chitauri, an alien race. I'm guessing the reason they aren't the main villains is because they would be too generic. I'd find the plot more believable if the Chitauri wanted to enslave Earth even if that is rather flimsy. That makes more sense than Loki jumping through these hoops. Loki desires power, but enslaving Earth doesn't have an end game. His goals have always been in part about attacking Asgard. This movie fails to capitalize on any of the attributes that make Loki fun or likable. Thor: The Dark World succeeds in fixing that.

Chris Hemsworth and Scarlett Johansson play Thor and Black Widow.

Part of Loki's plan is to have the Avengers fight among themselves. Cap challenges Tony Stark to a fight without his special suit. The Avengers are too smart for this and band together to save the day. The Chitauri manage to wormhole through to New York, destroying everything as the Avengers of course win. I appreciate that Captain America: Civil War addresses the collateral damage issue. While the Avengers may have saved the world in this movie, they still kill a lot of people

There's a giant airship that ascends from the ocean. Watching Marvel movies in succession, this happens a lot, a big structure rising out of the ocean.

Novel at the time, future Avenger movies are just better. This marked an event where all of Marvel's movie efforts came together. Now this movie is just a quaint look back.
