Plot
When an assassin veers off mission to rescue a child, she triggers a war with a powerful crime syndicate and reunites a gun-wielding sisterhood.
Verdict
This is a John Wick wannabe. From the various assassins to the underground network, this movie wants to be cool like Wick and just can't achieve it. Even the fights, John Wick has set the bar so high that it's hard not to look inferior. This movie is reaching for a level it can't achieve and it feels like it from the beginning.
Skip it.
Review
It's difficult not to see this as a John Wick copy. This almost seems like a parody with how it implements the John Wick aspects, but it's not. We start at a diner that seems to be a frequent haunt of assassins where Sam (Karen Gillan) gets her orders from "HR." She's an assassin like her mom and drives a Porsche 944 while wearing a fedora and trench coat. It just feels like the movie is trying too hard.
Lena Headey and Karen Gillan play Scarlet and Sam. |
For the next job her employer wants her to get new guns for no rhyme or reason other than to introduce characters we'll come back to later. She shows up at an armory disguised as a library yet they don't know her. I don't know where she usually goes for gun upgrades. This throws a lot at us, trying to be cool. It's all flash and little substance.
Sam's a killer for a living. When her next mark has a kid, for some reason that I'm guessing is to generate the plot for this movie, she feels obligated to help the kid. This aspect of the movie is a lot like The Man From Nowhere, which is a great movie, just not as grounded. A network of goons is tasked with stopping Sam. It culminates in a huge fight which would be the best portion of this movie.
