Verdict
There's a lot of nostalgia with this movie, but it's just a lot of fun. The movie doesn't take anything all that seriously as the movie isn't too far from a collection of gags held together by a loose story. In this movie, that works really well. So many scenes are worth mentioning or quoting. This movie strikes the perfect tone.
Watch It.

Review
When I first saw this in the mid-nineties, I thought it was the funniest movie I had seen. It was a rental back when there was such a thing, and I watched it over and over for those two days. I didn't know anything about SNL, Mike Myers, or the skit that inspired the movie. I just knew this movie was a ton of fun. This was back when SNL skits were made into movies. This might be the most successful.

Mike Myers and Dana Carvey plays Wayne Campbell and Garth Algar

Wayne (Miker Myers) and Garth (Dana Carvey) are just two rock music loving guys living at home with a little seen cable access show. Life changes when a television executive buys their show.

This had to be a movie where the cast and crew had a lot of fun making it. There's plenty of fourth wall breaking and mugging for the camera. The tone remains silly throughout. This movie is collection of skits, infused with gags and pop culture references.

Garth is the sidekick to Wayne and I'm kind of surprised how little agency has but that's part of the character. Wayne is the lead and Mike Myers maybe not be the best actor, but he's perfect for this role. Wayne and Garth are juveniles, in a professional setting you can imagine what happens. That makes almost every scene some kind of over the top gag. It works well. The acting is exaggerated, but so is the movie. This has some of the best lip synching scenes from the classic "Bohemian Rhapsody" song in the opening to "Foxy Lady."

With the structure of the plot, this has a pretty good story. This format could easily lead to a story that feels disjointed. Wayne and Garth's show gets picked up, they fight bureaucracy, and then the movie itself has a lot of fun with silly endings.

This movie is extremely quotable and knows it. This doubles down when scenes and reactions are exaggerated. Few movies have the confidence of this movie. The conclusion of the movie  completely defies convention. It's silly, and it only works because of the tone this movie maintains. Their theme song is "party time" and that's what this movie is, a party.
