Plot
Newly dumped thirty-somethings Peter and Emma team up to sabotage their exes' new relationships and win them back for good.
Verdict
It's a rom-com at its core, but this is smart and plays with the tropes and expectations. It's not completely predictable which is great, and it has more than a few nice moments.
It depends.
Review
Two different couples break up, and as usual only half of the couples want to break up. A haphazard meeting between dumpees Emma (Jenny Slate) and Peter (Charlie Day) leads to them concocting a plan to break up their ex's new relationship and get back together.
Jenny Slate and Charlie Day play Emma and Peter |
From the premise I fully expected that Emma and Peter would fall for each other by the end in trying to get their exes back. I hoped this would subvert expectations, and it does, though there were points I thought this was going to be exactly what I expected. This isn't a completely mindless and predictable movie, thankfully. It's not bad for Valentine's release.
There's a fun montage where Emma inserts herself to break up a relationship and Peter befriends Emma's ex as they both agree he won't be able to seduce her ex's new girlfriend.
This has more than a few funny situations. I like how it twists the typical plot line even though I do want Emma and Peter to get together. The movie really plays with the will they, won't they aspect.
The big conclusion is everyone, from Peter and Emma, their exes, and their new partners on one boat. That goes as well as you might expect. This movie does a nice job of balancing the usual genre tropes while still playing with expectations.
