Plot
A well-to-do husband who allows his wife to have affairs in order to avoid a divorce becomes a prime suspect in the disappearance of her lovers.
Verdict
What a waste of time. This never competently establishes the plot. Why do the characters act this way? I'm surprised this got the quality of actors it did. The plot is thin. This doesn't answer any questions, and the conclusion is a non-ending.
Skip it.
Review
My first question was what is this. Vic (Ben Affleck) rides his bike up to his house and starts taking his pants off on the front porch. This was the first of many questions. Vic allows his wife Melinda (Ana de Armas) to cheat, but I don't understand why he's against divorce. What's the dynamic? She is blatant about cheating on him, and he's okay with that. I never understood why they act this way. Melinda wants excitement, but why rub his face in it when he allows her to do that. Why is he against divorce? That seems like a preferable option.
Ben Affleck and Ana de Armas play Vic and Melinda |
Vic threatens his wife's latest fling after being thank for his 'hospitality.' Why threaten the guy when you've let it get to that point. Vic implies he killed his wife's previous lover. That rumor has legs and then someone. Everyone in the town has soon heard that, despite the unlikelihood the guy would share that information, especially to Vic's circle of friends. Melinda is mad at him for threatening the guy, but she's sleeping around. How does she justify her anger?
I don't know what this movie is. If I understood their arrangement, maybe this would make sense. It's a loveless marriage, and they have no reason to stay together. Vic could easily raise the kid on his own as he's retired. This movie is a real chore. I'm surprised de Armas and Affleck are in this. It's an erotic b-movie. The drama stems from the question of is Vic killing people. Vic's 'friend' is pushing the idea that Vic killed someone to the point of hiring a private detective. That's not very friendly, and what's the end in it?
This movie has no answers. The most surprising thing about the movie is the caliber of actors they got for this. This movie generates so many questions. The child doesn't talk like a child, a dog shows up at one point for no reason. There's no way anyone on set thought this was going to be good. I checked Wikipedia for a synopsis of the novel, and it seems the plots are largely the same though the book ends better.
