Plot
The Muppets present their own touching rendition of Charles Dickens' classic tale.
Verdict
This is a story that's been adapted, remade, satirized, and modernized many times. This version is a cute introduction for children that may be unfamiliar, but unless you're an adult that grew up on Muppets and wants a dose of nostalgia, you're not going to find anything new in this version. This iteration is perfectly competent though, and would certainly merit a spot in the annual Christmas movie playlist.
It depends.
Review
Charles Dickens's tale has seen many versions in many formats. This doesn't change the tale other than adding Muppet characters and the typical Muppet humor. It's a great introduction to the classic tale for a child that's unfamiliar.
Kermit the Frog plays Bob Crachit |
This is the age-old tale about a penny-pinching, greedy old man that's all around mean. For whatever reason, the spirits intervene in an effort to help him realize what his actions will reap. Ebenezer Scrooge (Michael Caine) sees his past, a time when he was happier and what his greed cost him. If he hadn't been so focused on his job and making money, maybe he wouldn't be alone now. Scrooge sees his present; how he's regarded and how his employee Bob Cratchit played by Kermit the Frog lives modestly with his family. For the kicker Scrooge sees his future. No one likes him and they'd be happy if he were dead.
Michael Caine plays Ebenezer Scrooge |
These visions transform Scrooge as he realizes the error of his ways and vows to make amends. The formerly bah humbug, Christmas hating Scrooge turns his scorn into Christmas cheer. It's a great story which is why it's been copied so many times in so many mediums. That's also why it can feel a bit bland. I've seen a version of this story nearly a dozen times, but the Muppet version is certainly sweet and humorous.
