Malignant Movie Review

Malignant (2021)

Watch the trailer
Written by: James Wan & Ingrid Bisu and Akela Cooper (screenplay by) & Akela Cooper (story by)
Directed by: James Wan
Starring: Annabelle Wallis, Maddie Hasson, George Young
Rated: R

Plot
Madison is paralyzed by shocking visions of grisly murders, and her torment worsens as she discovers that these waking dreams are in fact terrifying realities.

Verdict
The more fun this becomes, the farther it strays from reality. It's more a thriller with horror elements as we're left wondering who the killer is and how the main character connects. The big reveal certainly surprises, and that is the best part of this movie. Everything else is a fairly standard murder mystery.
Skip it.

Review
This plays into some typical horror tropes, from the deranged doctor's office in a basement to home appliances acting mysteriously. The question is how the two settings connect. Madison (Annabelle Wallis) has a connection to the killer. She has visions, and of course the police are skeptical.

Annabelle Wallis plays Madison.

I was guessing at the usual horror movie tropes, that Madison was the patient in the first scene or twins or that Madison is the killer. No matter what you guess, it's unlikely you'd guess right as the answer is wild. It leads to some great imagery, but aside from the big reveal this is just a thriller with horror elements.

The logic doesn't hold up, but it works great in a horror movie. It works even better if you don't question anything you see. The cooler this becomes, reality becomes more distanced. I really want to know how 'it' works, but there's no way to explain it so I'm glad the movie doesn't explain it. Trying to explain it would just dig a deeper hole. I really like the imagery, but other than one good fight scene, there's not much of a draw to the rest of the movie.
