Plot
A very rich and successful playboy amuses himself by stealing artwork, but he may have met his match in a seductive insurance investigator.
Verdict
Brosnan manages to be more suave than James Bond, starting a relationship with the person investigating him. While that's not enough to carry the movie, he's a thief that steals for the thrill, and it's his heists and schemes that make this a lot of fun. Stealing art makes him more than just a common crook. Crown has a flair for the dramatic. His motives ultimately end up creating an elaborate prank that no one is able to predict.
Watch It.
Review
Thomas Crown (Pierce Brosnan) likes to hang out at the art museum. He's well-off, rich really. We see him undertake business deals and get fitted for a suit while simultaneously an art heist is underway at the museum. I soon began to wonder if Crown hired this crew to stage a theft as a cover to his own heist. It seem to be the case.

A one-hundred million dollar Monet painting is missing, and the insurance company sends Catherine Banning (Reno Russo) to retrieve it. While she's working with the cops, they have different goals. She wants the painting, and they want the culprit. Crown and Banning go on a date. He's suave and she's suspicious, seeing this as a way to get closer to him and the truth. She uses the date to swipe his keys, get into his house, and find the stolen painting. She breaks a few laws, but her job is retrieval. Everyone but Crown is shocked that the recovered painting is a forgery. The cops should arrest her for breaking several laws, but they only want Crown who they think is guilty. It's the wheels of justice and all. Crown and Banning start a relationship, though she claims it's to get close and find the painting. She's doing a fantastic job of faking her interest. Being rich, the world is Crown's playground, and she's along for the ride.

They are diametrically opposed. He's a thief and she's an investigator. Where does this fling go? She gets mad he's seeing someone else, but it was a test to see if she was just feigning interest for the painting. It's a cat and mouse game, and maybe they just like the danger of it. The pair has a falling out as she thinks he's interested in someone else and stringing her along. It's only too late she realizes that isn't the case.
Banning determines Crown's forgery was based on the original. The edges are in a frame and never seen by anyone but the museum. The forgery's borders match the original. The cops find Crown's forger and set a trap. He was counting on it, using it to create an elaborate ruse in the museum. It's a gotcha. The painting in the museum, loaned by Crown, is also a forgery. It's just a forgery with a big twist. This museum escapade was a ruse to reveal just how efficiently he faked everyone out.
It's a fun heist movie precisely because this thief isn't out for money. Crown's goal is to see if he can. He's a thrill seeker playing games, His favorite part seems to be how much he can fool everyone.
