Plot
An astronaut crash lands on a mysterious planet only to discover he's not alone.
Verdict
It's a survival movie with dinosaurs, and unfortunately it doesn't do anything new. The setting could be any jungle and the dinosaurs could be any aggressive animal. It's a neat idea and setting, but it fails to capitalize on it.
Skip it.
Review
This provides just enough backstory to put Mills (Adam Driver) on a risky space mission to pay for his daughter's treatment. We don't know what it is, but it's enough reason to get him in space on a dangerous mission. As soon as we're on the ship it crashes. This movie wastes no time getting right into the plot. It's a fun premise where an an astronaut somehow crash lands on dinosaur era Earth.
Mills and Koi (Ariana Greenblatt) are the only survivors but they speak different languages. It's an odd couple pairing as they try to brave the elements and dinosaurs. Through their troubles they bond, saving each other along the way. It's a neat concept, but just a bit too simple. They could be facing any dangerous animal and the result would be the same. Dinosaurs seem to be employed just to generate interest. I wish they felt integral to this story.
Adam Driver plays Mills |
This does do a great job of employing the Chekhov's gun trope, but this is another aspect that could substitute any dangerous animal for dinosaurs.
The credits are my favorite part of this movie. Everything else is predictable and expected. The credits are a timeline that show the formation of Earth. It's not a shock or a big reveal, the title reveals what this world is.
